Chicago White Sox's Mark Buehrle hesitant to change off-season routine

By Mark Gonzales

The White Sox enforced protective measures on ace Mark Buehrle last year in an effort to preserve the left arm that has hurled at least 200 innings in each of the last eight seasons.

But after laboring through five innings Tuesday, Buehrle is puzzled by suggestions he may need to alter an off-season training program he said has worked well for him since he came to the majors in 2000.

"[The Sox told me] I probably need to do more, but I've done this for eight to 10 years and have never been on the disabled list or missed a start," Buehrle said Wednesday. "But I'm getting older and never have gone through this before, and throwing so many innings."

In recent off-seasons, Buehrle has used the first part to rest his arm while working with a trainer before throwing during the latter part of the time off.

"I don't think I'm going home and playing catch for two extra months because it's too much," Buehrle said. "I look at the off-season as resting for the season."

Buehrle's 89th pitch Tuesday was clocked at 89 m.p.h., so there was some agreement Buehrle's main problem was location rather than a lack of arm strength.

"When you throw 200 innings for the last [eight] years, you have to be careful and take care of yourself a little better," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He's coming on. The bad thing about the game was everything was up. Maybe because he was excited, got pumped up and had so many days off he thought he was Randy Johnson and forgot who he was."
