White Sox news and notes

SURPRISE, Ariz. _ Cleaning out the notebook before the White Sox play a Cactus League game against the Royals.

* Bartolo Colon and Jose Contreras threw 50 pitches each during their second round of live batting practice Thursday morning.

Contreras is scheduled to make his Cactus League debut on Sunday against Seattle. Colon starts Monday vs. Kansas City. He's expected to talk to the media for the first time after the outing.

Pitching coach Don Cooper raved about Colon after his first b.p. session on Monday and manager Ozzie Guillen offered similar praise for the burly right-hander Thursday.

* As Jerry Owens continues struggling, Ozzie said Brent Lillibridge is likely to get a look in center field. Lillibridge is a natural shortstop, but he's played center before and has the speed to hit in the leadoff spot.

* Who's hot: Gordon Beckham (just had to mention him again) leads the Cactus League with 5 doubles. Jeff Marquez has pitched 5 scoreless innings this spring, all against the Cubs. Dwayne Wise, who starts in center today, is batting .385.

* Who's not: Jim Thome, not playing today due to a bad back, is batting .143. Outfielders Jerry Owens and Brian Anderson are each batting .200. Adam Russell
hasn't shown anything while allowing 7 earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.

* Jose Contreras was officially sworn in as a United States citizen on Wednesday. Contreras left camp for two days to attend the ceremony in Florida.

“I feel grateful that this country game me the opportunity to be a baseball player and everything I have dreamed about,” said Contreras, a native of Cuba. “I feel it's an honor to have the blue passport.”
